Ghost in a Jar

December 18th, 2007

This is a pretty cool idea that could be used for a spooky revelation or with maybe, I dunno, Ghost Vision?

I’ve yet to try this, but if it looks like that when I do it, it’ll be very neat.

You could use it for a card revelation but with the brief second that it’s seen they might miss it. I think it looks so creepy, what it would look like if it were a real ghost. Maybe just using ambiguous shapes and figure, which limits the type of routines you could use it in. With most things I think that it’s a matter of making it your style but with this I can’t see it as a comedy type magic trick. It’s just too spooky.

ALSO, if you (like me) don’t like to speak about supernatural powers, then leave this trick for somebody else. My performing character attributes all the magic to skill and practice but for those performers who have more of an edge of mystique about them this would be very nice.

I’m sure there are logical ways to use it in a non-supernatural way but you should watch out not to cheapen it? It’s like using spirit slates as the climax to your ambitious card routine. I’m not bashing creativity but I think more performers should think about how to be creative within their style and not just any idea they come up with.

Andrew might agree that alot of ideas he comes up with might be cool looking and creative but outside of his personal performing style…be glad that he’s able to share those with us so freely so that we can use them if they fit our style.

I’ve been guilty of this crime until recently when I decided I needed to figure out what type of show I want to put on and stick to it. Not, half manipulation, half spiritualism, and half comedy gags. (yes I know that’s three halves) Maybe I could have three separate shows but for one show it’s too much clutter.

Maybe I’m just purging my own devils? In any rate I’m interested if anybody could mention any possible non-supernatural applications to this effect. I think that a card revelation would be logical but only if the rest of the show accepted this type of effect without also making a ‘card trick’ look cheesy. If I could contact ghosts I’d ask them other questions other than what card you picked, I mean can’t other magicians tell that just by looking at people?

BUT if it were presented not as a trick but as a test to see if the ghost was present a card could be chosen but not revealed but sealed in an envelope….or even set on fire instead of a match! The card would be written like finger marks in a foggy mirror….

ALSO You could just have a spooky looking hand appear or a screaming open mouth or an open pair of eyes…..CREEPY!

I found that ghosts and cards are hard to mix right…that’s one of the reasons why I don’t do the ghost glass (where you breathe on the disc) anymore…anybody do that effect? The one thing this has that the ghost disc thing doesn’t is that it ends clean, I’m guessing. Where the disc will do the same thing everytime you breathe on it.

    Wow…when I start talking….I’ll shut up now.

Hey, what type of alcohol do you use for this, and secondly does it need to be warm out to sun this and is there anyway we can set this up without using the sun what else could we use to get ghost jar working if lets say we want to do it to someone at night and the sun is not out is there a way to prepare this with lighting or anything?

thanks any advise would be helpful

This effect screams seance. If done correctly it could be an important part of any seance routine.
