The Origami Effect
Instantly turn a slip of paper into the origami shape of the animal a person is visualizing in their mind. Turn a borrowed bill into a butterfly. Tear up a newspaper and produce an animated origami rabbit. Andrew Mayne presents The Origami Effect; powerful, visual magic that lets you give form to thoughts.

- The Origami Effect: A spectator thinks of an animal from a list of over 40 different origami shapes and you change the Post-It-Note into the animal instantly before their eyes.
- The Recycled Rabbit: Tear a sheet of newspaper to pieces and then restore it into an origami rabbit that can’t sit still. Great for kids and grown-ups alike. Takes only minutes to prepare.
- Psychic Origami: Borrow a dollar from a spectator and change it into the animal they’re visualizing in their mind. Includes multiple presentations.
- Wineglass Origami: A devious way to change a borrowed bill into an origami shape right under your spectator’s noses.

The Origami Effect is a one-on-one teach in style DVD. You’ll learn different handling techniques as well as Andrew’s extremely practical and deceptive method for forcing words and images.

Getting ready for the Castle
So Rudy Coby, calls me up and asks me if I want to perform at the Castle during his week there. “Sure”, I respond without really thinking it through. After I hang up I realize I haven’t done a straight up magic show in the last million years that didn’t involve explaining how oxytocin receptors can be manipulated to encourage confabulation or how long dead Scottish philosphers deeply understood modern neuroeconomic principles. No problem…
Ever since I stopped touring most of my performing has been at conferences on economics and science. It’s a very fun venue and has allowed me to meet some very cool people. I’ve learned a lot from those folks and my show has evolved considerably from the experience. The problem is that my show evolved into a lecture. Great for those conferences, not so much for general audiences. While I think lay people would be interested in the same stuff I am, just not in that venue.
So now I find myself starting over from square one. Only this time I plan on using some of what I’ve learned in the structure of the show. I’ve actually called on one of my super genius science friends to help me with a stunt that I’ll be doing unless it actually kills me first.
In ten days I’ll get to perform this new hybrid of a show that evolved from the lecture that evolved from my original show. I’ve got some cool stuff planned and I hope it all works out right. We’ve already tested some of the stuff (Like Puppet Prestige) and called in a favor or two for a special guest appearance…
If you’re in town and want to check it out, rumor has it that there may be day passes available here: broman@magiccastle.com
I’ll also be posting on Twitter when I have guest slots available.
Hope to see you there…
New app
I’ve been working on an app based on the idea behind my Ghost Vision effect. Only this isn’t a magic trick…
The Instamagic Camera
What happens when you combine a psychological principle and a couple cold reading techniques in an iPhone app? Hopefully a fun result. For the Instamagic Camera, my latest and most sophisticated iPhone application I decided to build it around some techniques I use in my own magic and present it in a fun, visual way.
The application lets people mix an onscreen deck of cards – this is being generated in real time using a physics engine so no two shuffles are ever the same. They’re then asked to concentrate on a face-up card. Some adjustments are made to the camera and then the image of their card develops on a polaroid right before their eyes. it can be repeated over and over.
I also have two other effects in the app. One is a new take on the Princess Card trick where the thought of card ends up as a blurry smear. I’ve also included a modern take on a classic number trick.
When the app hits the iTunes store it’ll be just $.99.
Working on my next app

It’s going to be an automatic magic effect.
Adventures in iPhone App Making
I started creating tricks for the iPod and the iPhone as soon as they first came out (that’s how I own iPodTricks.com). But until now all of my iPhone effects have been web based ones you use on someone else’s iPhone. I came up with iPhoneTrick.com a year before there was such a thing as 3rd party iPhone applications because there wasn’t really any other option. Since then the site has become super popular and racks up thousands of visitors a day (my YouTube video explaining how to use it has over 1,000,000 views).
I’ve been meaning to develop a standalone iPhone trick since it was possible but kept procrastinating. I’ve seen a ton of stuff come out, most of which is blatantly bad cash grabs. I have nothing against cash grabs, but an iPhone app that’s just a couple pages of text or a set of very ugly images isn’t going to get anybody excited.
The first app I really liked was Chris Kenner’s Rising Card effect. It’s a very polished, well thought out effect.
Since there was no way I could compete with that, I decided to hold off for a while. That was until I got a call from a friend who wanted to collaborate. Our last project was almost 10 years ago and became super popular since then: Bob the Psychic Cockroach from Shock FX.
Bob has been underground (literally) for a while but he’s decided to make his return to the public eye in the form of an iPhone application. We’ve been working for the past few weeks getting everything just right. I used James Cameron’s performance capture system to create the virtual version of Bob. I think you’ll be pretty impressed.
Working with Bob again was so much fun, we actually made two applications. From a magic point of view they’re both simple effects based on classic magic tricks. But Bob is a showman and he brings new life to them.
All the lay people we showed the effects to were both fooled and entertained by Bob. He sings and dances as he makes the magic happen and he came up with an idea for a great gross out ending that’s a touch back to out original effect in Shock FX.
Right now we’re waiting for app store approval which can take anywhere from two weeks to infinity. Keep your antenna crossed and we’ll let you know as soon as they’re available at the bargain price of $.99.
Event Horizon trailer and pre-order
Shipping December 26th
Andrew Mayne, creator of Gut Buster and In Half presents a stunning new illusion.
Is it an escape, a penetration or a teleportation?
Members of the audience are asked onstage to inspect a 24″ metal plate with a 7″ hole cut in the center. After they’ve inspected it to their satisfaction they’re invited to sit down. The illusionist then sticks one arm through the center of the hole and grasps the edge of a curtain with the metal plate trapping his arm and separating him from the front of the stage. In one violent motion the magician is now standing in front of the metal plate apparently having either passed through it or teleported from one side to the other.
This new twist on Andrew Mayne’s A-Frame illusion is a super-compact effect that can be built quickly using off the shelf parts from a hardware store and fit inside a suitcase.
Event Horizon can be adapted to perform in most every performing environment. No assistants required.

The Event Horizon is near
Somewhere between a penetration and a teleportation is: Event Horizon.
The trailer drops tomorrow along with pre-ordering.
I’m very stoked about this DVD. The effect is a very physical, visual illusion. It’s based on an earlier idea of mine you might recognize with a really cool twist and handling.
I got very experimental with the production of the DVD and it uses everything from handheld iPhone footage, split screens and really cool reverse film effects to help teach the illusion.
It’s super easy to build and can be performed in just about any situation.
