Andrew Mayne: Ghost Diver VR Experience

To prepare for my Discovery Channel Shark Week television special (Andrew Mayne: Ghost Diver), I made a virtual reality simulator (because, of course.)

This version is a work in progress, but I thought some of you might want to check it out. I've only tested it on the Oculus Quest.

Great whites can tell when you're looking at them, so as long as you periodically keep an eye on the sharks, they'll keep their distance. If you don't, well, they like to come up and say 'Hello.' I used a shield to gently tell them that I was occupying the space they wanted to rest their mouths.

I had an amazing experience in the 'Isle of Jaws' with over a dozen great whites around me at one time (no cage!!!) with the incredible Andy Cassagrande watching my back. I also got to test out some cool tech you can see in the show. The white sharks were curious and liked to investigate more closely. They're amazing creatures and a vital part of our ocean ecosystem. My ultimate goal is to help develop tools to allow us to observer while protecting theses creatures.

I built this using A-Frame. It's awesome. You can check it out here: https://aframe.io.

To play: On your Oculus browser go to: andrewmayne.com

(Scroll past my dumb face to the first post. The Glitch version is at ghostdiver.glitch.me, but may not be current.)

Instructions: Keep looking at each shark as often as you can to let them know you're paying attention. Always keep an eye out behind you. Great whites are ambush hunters and like to sneak up on you. If one gets too close, use your shield to bounce them away.

Right trigger: Add sharks

Left trigger: Remove sharks

Y- button: Night Mode (Fun!!!)*

This experience requires a 6DoF VR headest (Oculus Quest, etc.) with tracked controllers

How to Make Money on Mars: The Economic Case for Exploring Mars and Beyond

Once a far off dream, colonizing Mars is a very real possibility with the announcement of SpaceX’s plan to get humans there in the next decade. But how do you pay for it? What are the economic benefits? Why haven’t we done it before?

The answers might astound and surprise you as Mayne explains that colonizing Mars could lead to the biggest economic boom in history. Looking beyond Mars as a tourist destination or temporary source of novelty and treating Mars as a technology problem could usher in an age of innovation even greater than the microprocessor or the Internet.

It’s not one thing or a single spin-off tech that will create trillions of dollars of new wealth; it’ll be the thousands of solutions and companies created as private capital and the technology industry focuses on the new age of human exploration.

In How to Make Money on Mars, Mayne breaks down the different stages of economic opportunity using historical precedents and explains how to fund the first mission to ultimately turning Mars into the technology center of the Solar System.

“Enthralling . . . The author, a professional magician, makes the impossible seem probable in this twisty, clever treat.”--Publishers Weekly

In Black Fall, the third book in the ITW Award-nominated series that began with self-published eBook phenomenon Angel Killer, magician-turned-FBI agent Jessica Blackwood investigates a series of seemingly unrelated, but equally bizarre and sinister, crimes that lead her to the Colorado desert and a town that has, simply, disappeared.

With two big cases under her belt, FBI Agent Jessica Blackwood is learning to embrace her unconventional past as the rising star in a family dynasty of illusionists. Her talent and experience endow her with a unique understanding of the power and potential of deception, and a gift for knowing when things are not always as they appear to be. Once resenting her eccentric grandfather, a brilliant magician in his own right, Jessica now sees him as a mentor and regularly seeks his advice about her work.

But Jessica’s routine surveillance operation becomes a fight for survival when a disturbed young woman, clutching a baby, shows up at the stake-out location and threatens to kill her child. On the same day, an hour after a severe earthquake rocks the eastern seaboard, a strange video goes viral. Nobel Prize-winning physicist Peter Devon has been dead for eight years, yet here he is on camera, predicting the location and date of the earthquake. Jessica is put on the case by her boss, Dr. Ailes, but when Detective Aileen Lewis reports that they’ve found a Jane Doe who matches her description of her attacker, she’s torn between professional duty and a personal desire to find out who the woman was, and why she was killed.

The investigations pull her in very different directions—until they start to converge, leading Jessica to confront something darker, and more powerful, than anyone expected. Something so twisted, only one person could be behind it…the Warlock
